YOGA AND MEDITATION: THE SILENT BENEFIT TO YOUR TRAINING

Yoga is the relationship of breath and movement. Yoga has been described as “a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline, a part of which including breath and control, simple meditation and the adoption of specific bodily postures, is widely practiced for health and relaxation”.

Meditation is the practice where an individual trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness, either to realize some benefit or for the mind to simply acknowledge it’s content without becoming identified with that content or as an end in itself.

Yoga and meditation go hand in hand. Yoga is an active state of meditation, and the benefits of both practices to both your physical body as well as spiritual one marry together perfectly, regardless of who you are and what sport you train for.

The first few minutes of a good yoga class will begin with a focus on breathing practice. Tuning out everything around you and allowing your whole body to sit in peace, relax and send all of your thought and awareness into your inhale and then your exhale.

Deepening your inhale…7, 8,9, 10 seconds. HOLD. Open your mouth and slowly exhale all the air…..7,8,9,10, empty lungs HOLD. And again…hold, and again…. until all of your attention is drawn inward, on nothing but what you were born with, and all that matters… your breath.

This is a state of meditation, of bliss, of nothingness and everything all at once. This is YOGA. This is MEDITATION.

Taking 60 to 90 minutes everyday, or even every few days to turn inwards in a world that has our attention pulled outwards and in so many directions is not only great for our mind to have a sense of relaxation and non-thought, but the physical benefits of the practice runs a list a mile long.

Like it or not, we are all living in a constant state of stress in one-way or another. STRESS is one, if not THE NUMBER ONE factor in physical ailment and disease. Life is very fast paced these days and we are kind of forced to “keep up” or get out of the way. We often don’t feel stress the way we would assume one feels it, because for a lot of us it has become our “norm”. Adding to the stress of everyday living, we head into the gym. The gym, although incredible for our mental and physical body, adds another layer of stress in the form of physical stress.

Meditation is a great way to decompress, remove oneself from the daily stresses both external and internal, known and unknown.

During your first 5 minutes in still silence focusing on just your breathe might feel like an hour, in fact, it will. It will be hard, you will feel fidgety, and your mind will wander. Do not worry, do not judge yourself for it, just note the thought and send your thoughts back to breathing. The more you practice this, the easier and more enjoyable it will become. Please, DO stick it out, give yourself 30 days of 5-10 minutes a day. Meditation and internal focus practice allows you to connect with a part of yourself that you likely didn’t even know existed.

When we quiet the world and the thoughts and the ego, we are able to actually discover ourselves. This is where magic happens, where dreams and goals find their path to fruition. Where you learn what it is that YOU actually need or don’t need. You find the space to BREATHE, and to BE.

Practicing yoga and meditation regularly teaches you patience and inner strength in a whole new manner. Your physical training will be stronger, your drive will be on a new level and your focus will be clearer and more in tune with your goals than ever before.

You will wish you sat in silence with yourself a lot sooner…
